only country where ordinary civilians are killed by a dictator. or a leader. that has such a history of violence against his own people. yet, we chose libya to go in. why? bingo. you have asked the biggest question of all. is this this is a new kind of war and we ve never done this that i can leb? u. remember in u.s. history, we have gone into protect civilians and is not about changing government but the policies of the government and does it set us up for a precedent? yesterday, you saw the civil war in yemen, the yemeni government is killing its people. and the syrian government is doing the same and we know the iranian government is, are we getting into a new kind of warfare, limited wars of intervention and insert ourselves into the middle of a civil war to protect civilians? that is a slippery slope and sets a precedent. jamie: i have to ask you this question, i don t know if it is fair question.
to their own people, we are attacked from the crusaders from the outside, rally around me, muammar qaddafi and the second audience is the arab league and one reason we went into this is because the arab league was behind it and was going to participate in it and were going to send aircraft and have not shown up yet. so, what qaddafi is trying to do is a preemptive move, if you join this you will be killing arab women and children and, that this is the sliver of hope he has to holding on and admiral mullen and others said the mission is to protect civilians and not topple qaddafi, they hope somebody else could topple him but he could hang on. jamie: you say the arab league has not shown up and the u.n. resolution, 1973, what was unique about it, the arab league signed on. what is it you d like them to show up and do? what do they have available to help in this mission. they have a couple of things, and, a number of those countries
sort of help from above, some international system to take out the armor, and this is the result of that. they are celebrating today, jamie, because this is what they were waiting for. they knew they couldn t fight the tanks, but if they could take out the tanks, then they would have a real shot at winning this war and clearly, these tanks aren t going anywhere any more. jamie: rick leventhal live for us south of benghazi where a lot of action obviously has taken place. we appreciate your reports very much, rick. eric: so what is the strategy from a military standpoint? general jack haynes, a former fr vice chair and a fox military analyst joins us now. general, we saw so vividly that smoldering tank south of ben afghanistabenghazi behind rick. is that how qaddafi can be taken out? let s try to make some sense of what s going on here for the viewing audience. first of all, clearly the objective here is removal of
good to see you. jamie? jamie: president obama is in brazil today as part of a 5-day latin american trip. aides are saying he won t cut the trip short but the president is, of course, keying keeping e eye on the action unfolding in libya. mike emanuel joining us live from rio. mike, what do a we know about wt the president is doing in terms of briefing and action where libya is concerned today? reporter: jamie, we know president obama convened a security conference call with some of his key national security team members. defense secretary robert gates, secretary of state hillary clinton, and general carter hamm who is the commander leading the operation in libya. the president expressed his gratitude to the service members who are carrying out this effort to set up the no-fly zone in libya. there s definitely an effort here while the president is in latin america talking trade, talking about economic benefits to both the u.s. and brazil, an
