roosevelt and barack obama. in 1910, shtheodore roosevelt delivered his speech. last year, president obama went to the same town in which roosevelt made his speech and spoke about the economy. this two-hour speech was filmed by the hudson institute in washington, d.c. is c-span ready? good. get underway. good afternoon. aim bill shambra, director of hudson institute s bradley center for philanthropy and civic renewal. christie mcintire and i welcome you to today s panel discussion called osowatamie then and now. the title of today s panel osawatamie then and now, i confess, may be a bit misleading. if you re expecting a pageant with our panel reenacting scenes, you ll be sorely disappointed. i tried to talk them into it but it was a no go. just a little over 100 years ago on august 1st, 1910, former president theodore roosevelt mounted a kitchen table on the grounds of the 2 22-acre state park. he was helping to dedicate john brown state park and delivered what has gone dow
young folks evicted from zuccotti park, but they have identified the wrong target. whatever redistribution these crusaders clamor for from the 1% of the rich pales in significance in comparison to the massive and unjust distribution now going on among the generation. the sovereign debt crisis is a crisis not only of the united states but of current liberal democracy as such under the welfare state model. it s almost universal as events in europe are making clear. just think of how many progressives. only three years ago were touting europe and the european welfare state as the model for america. now you never hear a progressive invoke europe in a positive vein unless it s to describe a lovely dinner in paris on some ngo s dime. and yet in president obama s blueprint for the future, the great challenge of our time barely makes an appearance, being mentioned in a couple of lines that tout, of all things, the paltry savings of $1 trillion which is, of course, most lick fictiti
mind. he is in a mental institution and knows what is going on but he can t tell anyone how he feels for what he thinks. this land is your land began life with the title god bless america. you see the manuscript. it is god bless america and has some anti capitalists reverses that i don t remember singing in school. do you? a lot of americans never even heard them until january of 2009 when bruce springsteen and pete seeger sang them from the steps of the lincoln memorial at barack obama s inaugural concert and newspapers said that is the way woody wrote it? that is the way woody wrote it. i will leave you with a version that i think pretty well charts the progression of this song from the angry and bitter satire it was to the unofficial national anthem that eventually became. thank you for coming out and listening tonight.
