Kingsley Ben-Adir sit down to take a closer look at the
One Night in Miami scene in which their respective characters Sam Cooke, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Malcolm X have another heated conversation about their place in the Civil Rights movement as Black men with prominent voices in culture.
As the cast reveals, this scene is one that was actually created solely for the film and doesn’t appear in the play on which the film is based. But since writer Kemp Powers wrote both the play and the script, he was able to create a scene that didn’t feel out of place and allowed director Regina King to expand the scope of the settings beyond the hotel room where most of the movie takes place. Though it allowed the characters to venture out of that isolated space, it also presented challenges of its own since it left the cast without props or places to sit, meaning they had to be more contemplative of what they were doing between scenes.
The 78th Golden Globe Awards are scheduled for Feb. 28 and will be shown on NBC. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will return to host the ceremony, which they last led in 2015. The Golden Globes typically take place in January. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the awards, pushed the ceremony to February this year, citing the coronavirus pandemic. Streaming services, including Netflix and Amazon, dominated the list of nominees, both with their own films like “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “One Night in Miami,” which wouldn’t have relied on open movie theaters to find eyeballs even during a standard year and with movies that the streaming companies purchased from traditional studios, including Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” We’ll talk about actors, directors, and other Golden Globe nomination next week.

Over the years, the fact that February is designated as Black History Month has prompted both celebration and skepticism. On the plus side, February typically brings to TV a richer-than-usual selection of films and shows that are created by Black artists and that explore the texture and history of Black experience and culture. On the minus side, critics question why one paltry month is deemed sufficient to honor Black Americans, and their contribution to the nation.
