Russian Reactions To The Agreement Between China And Iran – A Mix Of Gloating Over America s Comeuppance, Coupled With Concern Over Chinese Competition

On March 27, 2021, China and Iran signed a 25-year cooperation agreement valued at 400 billion USD and integrating Iran into the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative.[1] For Russia, the agreement was received on two levels. On one level, Russia, which has been on the receiving end of Western sanctions viewed the agreement as a blow to the sanctions policy and therefore as a positive. On a different level, the Sino-Iranian agreement, coupled with recent activity by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the region that included visits to Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, Bahrain, and Oman raised the question of Chinese competition for Russia. On April 5, 2021, a Pakistan-based jihadi group posted on its Telegram channel asking supporters for feedback and suggestions. The channel provided a Protonmail account for supporters to contact, as well as Telegram and Gmail accounts.

On March 31, 2021, the media arm of a Gaza-based jihadi group released on its Telegram channel a poster promoting a fundraising campaign to equip fighters. The poster provided a Bitcoin address for donors who would like to pay in cryptocurrency, along with a Telegram bot address and a mail.com email address to contact the campaign organizers. The poster also cited Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden as urging Muslims to help jihadis take back Palestine by joining the ranks of jihadis and through donations.
Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdul-Salam said that the UAE is part of the coalition that is attacking Houthi targets in Yemen, therefore it may very well become a target for Houthi bombings at any given time. He made these remarks in an interview that aired on Mayadeen TV (Lebanon) on March 25, 2021.
