Ranchi: The number of active Covid cases in Jharkhand breached the 50,000-mark on Tuesday with 6,020 new infections and 4.247 recoveries in the last 24 hours. With 131 deaths, the state also registered its biggest single-day fatality count, surpassing the 124 reported on Monday.
The state’s cumulative caseload stood at 2,13,414, of which 1,59,916 have recovered, 51,252 are active cases and 2,246 have died. More than half the death through the pandemic have taken place this month alone.
Ranchi continued to get a four-digit spikes as 1574 new cases and 61 deaths. East Singhbhum accounted for 992 infection and 14 deaths. The surge continued in Hazaribag too with 584 cases, followed by Ramgarh (301), Bokaro (275), Jamtara (266) and Dhanbad (221). As many as eight districts logged between 100 and 200 cases. Remaining seven districts reported cases in double digits.

RANCHI: Jharkhand s Covid-19 death toll rose to 1,778 as the state reported 63 fresh fatalities in the last 24 hours, the health department said in a bulletin on Saturday.
Altogether, 5,741 new infections pushed the coronavirus caseload of the state to 1,90,692, it said.
Jharkhand now has 43,415 active cases, while 1,45,499 people have so far recovered from the disease, the bulletin said.
Of the fresh fatalities, 15 each were reported from Ranchi and East Singhbhum, seven from Koderma it said. The remaining deaths were registered in several other districts.

DUMKA: Two days after her boyfriend was found hanging from a tree, a teenage girl from a village under Malpahadi outpost of the town police station in Pakur district allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a tree on Monday night. The incident came to light on Tuesday morning after the villagers found the 15-year-old girl hanging and informed her parents.
While the girl s father said she was upset over her the death of her boyfriend, who hailed from the neighbouring village, his mother filed an FIR saying her son was killed by the girl s parents, who were reportedly opposed to the relationship.
Chief minister Hemant Soren speaks at the online India Conference organised byHarvard University on Saturday
RANCHI: Chief minister Hemant Soren on Saturday night shared the pain of tribals, who he said are discriminated against in the country, during the online India Conference of Harvard University. He also differentiated the religion the tribals follow from Hinduism and said a separate code in the upcoming Census is the need of the hour. Soren became the first tribal leader from the country to participate in the conference which is into its 18th edition this year.
Soren was interacting with a senior fellow from Harvard Kennedy School, Dr Suraj Yengde, who threw a volley of questions related to tribal identity, Centre-state relations and the model of development among other issues.
