Every year, during Black History Month, President Fram Virjee and faculty/staff members from Cal State Fullerton visit different African American churches to encourage congregants (and their children) to attend college … and, specifically, Cal State Fullerton.
This year, because of the pandemic, in-person meetings weren’t possible so the president virtually visited four local African American churches: Christ Our Redeemer (Pastor Rev. Dr. Ralph E. Williamson), Johnson Chapel AME (Pastor Rev. Delman Howard), Friendship Baptist Church (Pastor Rev. Kenneth Curry Jr.) and Second Baptist Church (Pastor Rev. Ivan S. Pitts). While the format was different, the message was the same: “Come to Cal State Fullerton. We want you, we respect you, we need you.”

In another series, Loftin demonstrated how images shape societal views. He found pictures online of men of color in hoodies that didn t reflect his reality.
By using vibrant color, he flipped the script and changed the narrative. Trying to go for something more positive as opposed to put a stamp of criminal, he said.
Roberts, meanwhile, is an engineer and one of only a handful of Black women at her elite level. There s kind of this heavy feeling of your colleagues, seeing you as a diversity hire, and that s all they want you to be, she said.
If Cherry Hill is a melting pot, we need to act accordingly, she added.
The Cherry Hill School District serves more than 10,000 students. It remains predominantly white. Fewer than 10% of the students are Black.
The district said the new course is a long time coming. The graduation requirement affects incoming freshmen in 2021 and going forward. It s a collaborative effort with Black professors from local universities like Monmouth University and Rowan. What has gone on for hundreds of years has to stop. This is not something that just happened. There are systemic problems with race in the United States and we must talk about them, Superintendent Dr. Joe Meloche said.
