The rescuers tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Embry, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Burns was semi-conscious and having difficulty breathing when he was pulled from the water, his mother said. He was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by ambulance.
When his vital signs became unstable on Sunday night, Antonio Burns was put on a ventilator. He was taken off of the ventilator on Monday night and on Tuesday was scheduled to have an X-ray to see whether there was any water remaining in his lungs. Overall, we re praying for a full recovery, Asteria Burns said, but I know mentally this is something that he is going to have to deal with.
A Wilmington woman drowned Sunday afternoon near Kure Beach after helping save two children caught in a rip current.
Around 5:46 p.m., the Kure Beach fire and police departments responded to reports of multiple swimmers in distress near the North Avenue Beach Access, according to a news release from the Kure Beach Police Department.
Witnesses reported two children were caught in a rip current. At least five people on the beach and members of the Kure Beach Fire Department entered the water and successfully brought the children to shore, according to Sgt. Jamie King with the Kure Beach Police Department.
