A Jersey fishing leader has called for a “show of good faith” from France after dozens of French vessels descended on the island’s capital on Thursday.
The hours-long protest saw about 60 boats approach the port of St Helier in an escalation of a row over post-Brexit fishing rights, while two Royal Navy warships monitored the situation.
The UK Government says it will now work with France and Jersey to resolve the dispute before it escalates further.
The push for a diplomatic solution comes as a Jersey fisherman was unable to land his fresh catch in France on Thursday after reportedly being “intimidated and harassed”.

No formal measures have been introduced preventing Guernsey’s fishing fleet from landing their catches in France. However, tensions are still high as the dispute between our neighbours continues and, for that reason, French merchants have advised local fishing crews to wait until the situation has calmed down before they resume landings.

Jersey s government says France has broken the terms of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement after some French ports were officially closed to the island s fishermen.
Jersey s External Relations Minister Senator Ian Gorst says they immediately informed the European Commission once they learned of the decision.
Granville, Barneville-Carteret and Dielette ports have officially been closed to Jersey fishermen, the island s government confirmed.
We regret this action and don’t believe it is compliant with the terms of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement. For that reason we will refer the notice of this decision immediately to the European Commission.
