From his restaurant at an old Nazi military bunker on Jersey’s rocky northwest coast, former fisherman Sean Faulkner makes a prediction: “If they don’t get their own way, they’ll be back.”
Like his fellow islanders, Faulkner, 66, had just watched French fishing vessels stage a protest over changes in access to waters following the U.K.’s departure from the European Union. The standoff prompted Britain and France to deploy warships in the strip of sea that separates them. Billed as a game of chicken by U.K. tabloids, the same press rejoiced when the French went home.
Jersey fishermen today started giving away their lobster hauls for free as the dispute over fishing rights with France escalated.
France issued a legal notice to British fishermen last night that they were no longer welcome into French ports after one Jersey boat was threatened with violence and turned back.
Fishermen at St Helier Port, which was blockaded by French rivals this week, said they had been left in a vicious cycle due to the dispute.
Gary Maranet, 33, skipper of a 26-foot boat, began emptying his lobster pots and giving the expensive fish away to the public.
He said: ‘Jersey fishermen like me are stuck and in a dead end.

Guernsey s government said that while there are no formal measures stopping the Bailiwick s fleet from landing its catches, French merchants have advised waiting until the situation calms down.
No formal measures have been introduced preventing Guernsey’s fishing fleet from landing their catches in France. However, tensions are still high as the dispute between our neighbours continues and, for that reason, French merchants have advised local fishing crews to wait until the situation has calmed down before they resume landings.
