California wildfire explodes to nearly 2,000 acres as firefighters work to gain upper hand

A wildfire in Riverside County, California has burned through nearly 2,000 acres Sunday as roughly 130 firefighters work to contain its spread. The blaze, dubbed the Sanderson Fire, erupted at around 1 a.m. near La Borde Canyon Road and Jack Rabbit Trail.  Firefighters were able to stop the forward spread of the flames on Sunday afternoon after being assisted by three helicopters, six air tankers, and four fire crews. However, the Sanderson fire is currently only 10% contained, according to the latest update from Calfire. The cause of the incident remains under investigation. No injuries have been reported.

According to Fox News, around 130 firefighters worked to contain of the wildfire, dubbed the Sanderson Fire, which progressed to 1,933 acres. It started around 1 a.m. near La Borde Canyon Road and Jack Rabbit Trail and burned south of Beaumont, California. The cause of the wildfire is unknown, said a report from CBS Los Angeles. California Highway Patrol said it prompted the closure of Gilman Springs Road in both directions. According to NBC Los Angeles, there was an evacuation warning issued to residents north of Gilman Springs Road and south of Timothy Lane, including Jerry Street, McGehee Drive, Alberta Lane, Laurene Lane, Lisa Lane and Kevin Road.

The blaze exploded in size partly because firefighters had limited access in rugged terrain and windy conditions spread the flames. Containment was at 45% as of 7:45 a.m. M, fire officials said. Crews would remain on scene until it was completely contained, the agency said on Twitter.

The blaze, dubbed the Sanderson Fire, was reported at around 1 a.m. near the intersection of La Borde Canyon Road and Jack Rabbit Trail, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. The fire exploded in size partly because it was burning in a hard-to- reach spot and the windy conditions in the area, fire officials said. An evacuation warning was issued for homes north of Gilman Springs Road and south of Timothy Lane, including Jerry Street, McGehee Drive, Alberta Lane, Laurene Lane, Lisa Lane and Kevin Road.
