Picture: SUPPLIED LAUTOKA businessman Ben Padarath appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday charged with one count each of sedition, attempting to defeat the course of justice, destroying evidence and disobedience of lawful orders. He remains in detention and will reappear in court today. Appearing before magistrate Jeremaia Savou yesterday, Mr Padarath pleaded not guilty to all four charges. The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) alleges that on Sunday last week, Mr Padarath acted seditiously by posting information about an ongoing FICAC investigation on Facebook “with an intention to bring into hatred or excite disaffection against the administration of justice in Fiji”.

  Mar 15, 2021 05:51:36 PM A lawyer representing the State  could not explain in court why it took authorities so long to lay charges on eight former Fiji Corrections officers for causing the death of a serving prisoner in 2019. Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions lawyer Neeraj Sharma said they received the file of the former officers in January this year. DPP Christopher Pryde sanctioned charges against Isei Rakaso, Pita Raikoso, Josefa Boletakibureta, Waisea Sadranu, Josefa Satini, Joji Raqamate, Nemani Vasuvulagi and Apisai Naqamu in relation to the assault and death of Seremaia Naidole Momo today. They all appeared before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou at the Magistrates Court in Suva represented by the lawyers David Toganivalu and Tevita Cagilaba.

Vishaal Kumar Picture: FILE. Five  police officers charged with allegedly planting drugs in a vehicle belonging to a 23-year- old man in Suva appeared at the Suva Magistrates Court today. Rusiate Tuga Ralase, Simione Basulu, Apisalome Vesikula, Samuela Antonio and Orisi Tukana appeared under heavy police presence and were kept at the Juvenile Bureau Building instead of being kept at remand cell or being brought directly from the Police station which was the normal procedure. The five were charged with one count each of conspiracy to defeat justice while Mr Ralase and Mr  Basulu faced an additional charge of one count of abuse of office.
