Contract extension with First Student approved by Dist #205 School Board

The School Board for Galesburg District 205 approved a two-year extension with First Student for transportation needs. The extension includes a 15 percent increase in costs for the first year and a five percent increase for the second year. Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operation Jennifer Hamm explained the increase to the board at Monday night's meeting. "We were expecting an increase this year, given all the factors that are increasing in the world with substantially increased prices in fuel, with insurance, increasing wages of workers, and difficulty getting and recruiting workers." In other action, the school board approved the yearly dual credit agreement with Carl Sandburg College for students wishing to pursue college credit while also earning their high school diploma. Paris Regional Medical Center has named the students of Aikin Elementary School the winners of the Name Our Robot competition and giving the hospital’s robot her long-awaited name, Mira.

Dist #205 exploring adding more solar arrays

The District 205 school board was given a breakdown of its electricity expenses since the approval of the solar energy agreement and the renovation work at buildings around the district. Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operation Jennifer Hamm told the board the district is seeing a savings of $79,772.83. These savings have been seen even after several buildings saw significant expansions from the district-wide building renovation project and the addition of air conditioning at King Elementary. Superintendent Dr. John Asplund told the board that the district is looking at other avenues to expand on solar energy. "We're in the preliminary stages but I'm talking to two different companies," Asplund said Monday night. "I want to see the feasibility of buying it rather than doing the PPA, the power purchase agreement.
