With a prayer and a snip of scissors, the work of scores of Indianapolis community members and religious leaders came to fruition early Friday afternoon the state’s first transitional housing program for homeless LGBTQ youth officially opened. I am overjoyed to share this momentous occasion with you, Jenni White, executive director of Trinity Haven, the group leading the effort, told a crowd of about 75 people. May this home be the first of many where they know they have a home a place where they are safe, welcome and celebrated for exactly who they are.
Between 20 and 45% of all homeless youth identify as LGBTQ, according to a study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law. Harassment and discrimination contribute to the difficulties LGBTQ youth have finding stable housing, the study says, and family rejection is one of the leading factors in LGBTQ youth homelessness.

A former state representative who has was recently elected chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party has a history of anti-Islamic rhetoric and even joked about the execution of Hillary Clinton in a past Facebook post.
John Bennett, a former Republican member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, was elected the chairman of the Oklahoma GOP on April 10. He beat Rogers County party activist Christine Leeviraphan, former state Rep. Charles Ortega of Altus, and Jenni White, a former teacher and outspoken critic of the Common Core curriculum for public schools, to clinch the chair.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A former state representative with a reputation for anti-Islamic rhetoric has been elected as chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party.
Former state Rep. John Bennett won a first-ballot victory at the party convention Saturday at the Oklahoma City Convention Center, vice chairman Shane Jemison said Sunday.
Also seeking election to the chair were Rogers County party activist Christine Leeviraphan, former state Rep. Charles Ortega of Altus, and Jenni White, a former teacher who was an outspoken critic of the Common Core curriculum for public schools.
Jemison was reelected Saturday to a new term as the state party s vice chairman.

Former Rep. John Bennett, of Sallisaw, made a name for himself in the Oklahoma Legislature by frequently targeting followers of Islam.
Now, Bennett, who served eight years in the Oklahoma House, is one of three candidates vying to lead the Oklahoma GOP.
In a 2014 town hall meeting, Bennett said the Islamic faith “is a cancer in our nation that needs to be cut out.” He also called the world’s second largest religion a sociopolitical movement intent on world domination and destruction of Western civilization.
