GIRARD With Girard income tax collections down more than a half-million dollars from last year, Mayor James Melfi said he will veto any legislation that gives a pay raise to a city elected official.
Melfi told city council Monday that he is very troubled by the income tax numbers, which show a decrease from $3,569,154 in 2019 to $3,234,199 in 2020.
“The 2020 income tax collections are a disaster. It is the largest single decline in dollars and percentage in our city’s history,” he said.
Melfi also said major employer V&M Star Steel paid about $206,300 less in 2020 than in 2019, bringing the total income tax down by more than $541,000. The company paid $387,554 in income taxes in 2019 and $181,196 in 2020.

Tippecanoe County s recent steady drop in the overall seven-day positivity rate for COVID-19 should not trigger residents to relax their mitigation efforts, the county s health officer warned. We are encouraged by the recent decrease in new cases and positivity rate, Dr. Jeffrey Adler, with the Tippecanoe County Health Department, told the Journal & Courier. Much of the state is seeing a similar trend.
In the past two weeks since Tippecanoe County moved into the red status the highest rate of community spread the overall seven-day positivity rate for new COVID-19 cases has dropped considerably, according to the Indiana State Department of Health Dashboard.

NILES A North Bloomfield man is in Trumbull County jail after a Thursday chase led to his arrest.
Zachary Matheny, 26, of 7432 state Route 45, eventually was arrested on a warrant charge from Girard following the incident.
Around 2 a.m. Thursday, Niles officers noticed a white Pontiac Grand Prix traveling above the posted speed limit and with an “unusually loud exhaust” on Hartzell Avenue.
After turning on Vienna Road and eventually onto state Route 46, officers attempted a traffic stop and, according to the report, it was clear the vehicle had no intention of stopping.
The report states the vehicle was continuing northbound on Route 46, crossing over U.S. 422. At one point, the vehicle reached an excess of 90 miles per hour.
