ISA believes agriculture can lead the way on climate issues

May 14, 2021 IARN The Iowa Soybean Association is urging the administration to act innovatively and deliberately on how agriculture can help lead the way on climate and conservation issues. ISA President Jeff Jorgenson says the state’s soybean farmers have been incorporating conservation into competitive soybean production for more than 50 years. In a recent letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, the association decided to take this innovative approach and forward-thinking to USDA as it shapes a national climate strategy. “Iowa Soybean has an opportunity with climate and carbon credits,” Jorgenson told IARN field editor Brent Barnett. “For us as the association, we feel the carbon side of things also goes in-line with what water quality is and how we are going to be conservation farmers. All of it ties together.”

I wasn t being rude to them : Former mayoral candidate blocked on Twitter by City of Saskatoon

SASKATOON A former Saskatoon mayoral candidate has been blocked from social media pages managed by city hall. Cary Tarasoff, who collected 2,600 votes in the November civic election has been blocked by the City of Saskatoon, Saskatoon Fire Department and the Saskatoon Emergency Management Operations Twitter pages. “You got to wonder since I wasn’t being rude to them or anything, I was just stating things that they didn’t want to talk about so that’s why they blocked me,” Tarasoff told CTV News. The lockout comes after a series of interactions between Tarasoff and the trio of city Twitter pages. Tarasoff has been tagging civic departments, most notably the planning department, city manager Jeff Jorgenson and Fire Chief Morgan Hackl.

Proposed Saskatoon accommodation tax won t happen overnight, city manager says

SASKATOON The Governance and Priorities Committee on Monday voted in favour of pushing forward with the city’s grand vision of a new downtown arena, convention centre and larger entertainment district. Before the committee was an administration report outlining options to pay for it. The committee heard about the need for new entertainment infrastructure from SaskTel Centre and TCU Place board members, and the need for better tourism amenities from the hotel and tourism industry. The end goal, the city said, was to lessen the burden on property taxes. Administration recommended an accommodation tax on all hotel rooms sales, something done in other Canadian cities. But Tourism Saskatoon felt this step would only hurt an already decimated hospitality sector.
