Flotsam and jetsam: Virus-sniffing dogs and life after legal death
By Jim Carter
A crew of Golden Retrievers and Labradors are now being employed to sniff out people infected with the Coronavirus at airports in Chile, Finland and the United Arab Emirates, according to a Reuters report. The talented dogs, initially trained to detect drugs and explosives, can sniff out an infected (would-be) passenger with 85% to 100% accuracy. When they find a potential “spreader,” they’re trained to immediately just sit down. (Going to the dogs.)
And in England, Russell Jones, who recently broke his ankle and is using crutches, noticed that his dog, who accompanies him everywhere, had apparently suffered a similar injury and was walking with a noticeable limp, holding one foot off the ground. After a thorough examination, including x-rays, Jones and his vet realized the pooch was simply empathizing with his master. (Canine commiseration.)

Frenchwoman Jeanne Pouchain has an unusual problem. She s officially dead. She has been trying for three years to prove that she is alive.
The 58-year-old woman says she lives in constant fear, not daring to leave her house in the village of Saint Joseph, in the Loire region. Authorities seized her car over an unpaid debt she contests and which is at the center of her troubles. She fears the family furniture will be next.
