Purple People Bridge remains closed: Engineering firm to evaluate condition

View Comments The Newport Southbank Bridge Company has retained an engineering firm to determine the extent of repairs that will be needed to reopen the Purple People Bridge between Newport and Cincinnati. The pedestrian bridge that crosses the Ohio River has been closed since May 11, when a large stone fell into the river from a pier on the north bank. The bridge company said in a news release that WSP USA will evaluate the condition and safety of the span. We once again ask for the public s patience as we work diligently to reopen the popular span, so that it can be enjoyed in the safest manner possible, the release said.

View Comments The Giminetti Baking Company in Walnut Hills says it has hired one of the top pastry chefs in New York City to help launch its revamped café and bread shop Chef Cory Colton, who has been featured on Bloomberg news platforms, CNBC, the Eater food news and dining guide and The New York Times, is busy preparing for a mid-June opening of the newly dubbed The Bread Bar at Giminetti Baking Company. The café and bread shop at 2900 Gilbert Ave. temporarily closed in December to update its restaurant space and menu. Giminetti’s wholesale bakery operations at the same address continued to operate.

Man shot in Avondale dies of injuries View Comments Cincinnati police say a man found shot in the 600 block of Glenwood Avenue in Avondale about 9 p.m. Wednesday has died. Quentin Jolly, 33, succumbed to his injuries after he was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, police said in a news release. No suspect information was given. Monkeys reported on the loose in Cincinnati, but police say none found

Bruce VanHook, who manages the cemetery, was there at 6:30 a.m. “Between him and I, we have patrolled for probably the last two hours and we cannot see anything that is similar to a monkey,” Bittner said. The cemetery does have a flock of wild turkeys, he said. “Wild turkeys nest in trees, so the question is were they nesting in the trees, because whoever filmed and put on social media, it was through the power lines because you can see the power lines in the video.” Bittner said that means the animals had to be in the trees in section 29 near West 8th Street across from Kilbert Avenue.
