U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Cincinnati say they recently found about 34 pounds of liquid ketamine in bottles purporting to hold hand sanitizer.
The contraband anesthetic seized is worth nearly $220,000 and was discovered during inspections of South American and African freight bound for California, Customs said in a news release.
“Like many anesthetics, ketamine has legitimate medical uses, but it is often misused for its hallucinogenic and sedating effects,” the release said.
“Ketamine abuse typically occurs at raves and nightclubs and is commonly used to facilitate sexual assault crimes.”
The release said Customs officers in Cincinnati also recently found nearly 30 different kinds of steroids and prescription medications worth about $43,000 in a shipment of a glass anti-fogging product.
