The Eastern Coalfields Ltd s vigilance team in 2019 had detected an attempt to pilfer 500 tonnes of coal from company mines in West Bengal and this was reported to local authorities, but no concrete action was taken, officials said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday started questioning three railway officials, including a senior divisional manager-rank officer, in connection with the case, they said.

Three days after questioning West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee’s wife Rujira Banerjee, the CBI on Friday carried out searches at locations linked to Kolkata-based businessman Randhir Kumar Barnwal here in connection with its probe into the coal smuggling case, sources said.
An agency source related to probe told IANS, “The CBI team are carrying out searches at Barnwal’s residential premises here.”
He said the agency’s action came in the wake of the evidences suggesting his involvement after some transactions came to the fore.
The CBI questioned Rujira Banerjee and her sister Menka Gambhir on Tuesday and Monday.
ED searches 15 locations in poll-bound Bengal

Kolkata, Feb 26 : Multiple teams of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday carried out searches at 15 locations in poll-bound West Bengal in connection with the coal smuggling money laundering case.
The ED action comes almost one and half month after it had carried out searches at 12 locations in the state in the same case.
An ED official related to the probe told IANS, “Multiple teams of ED are carrying out searches at 15 locations in Kolkata, Purulia and Durgapur of West Bengal.”
The official, wishing not to be named, said that the action of the financial probe agency was based on the assessment of the documents it seized during the raids it carried out at a dozen locations on January 11.
