A common refrain for baseball and softball coaches is, “Don’t let a bad at-bat carry over to your defense.” Junction City second baseman Mackenzie Brantley hangs her hat on her defense. The senior admitted she s not always confident in the batter’s box. Her glove, however, is her biggest weapon.
PARKERS CHAPEL - Junction City exploded for 11 runs in the final two innings and beat Parkers Chapel 15-5 in a conference softball showdown on Friday. The Lady Dragons improved to 9-3 overall while the Lady Trojans fell to 3-4.
Before the season began, Junction City softball coach Jay Burroughs talked about his team’s potential. He also listed several players the Lady Dragons couldn’t afford to lose to injury.
Sophomore pitcher Karla Castillo topped the list. After one abbreviated week of softball, it’s obvious why.
JUNCTION CITY - Jess Thurmon stroked a two-out, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Junction City to a 5-2 win over Crossett Tuesday.
Junction City graduated three seniors off last year’s team that advanced to the 2A State Tournament. That included pitcher Tori McLelland, who had 16 strikeouts in the 2-1 win over Foreman in the regional tournament.
Junction City coach Jay Burroughs returns four senior starters and a talented crop of sophomores this season. But the holes to fill are large, including in the circle.
