New Braunfels High School students become first to have preferred names used at graduation

After a long, difficult and liberating journey, he discovered himself and decided to change his name.  His preferred name, Lucas, was announced during the New Braunfels High School graduation ceremony in May.  Jay Barton was one of two transgender students at New Braunfels High School who graduated with their preferred names.  LISA DREHER | Herald-Zeitung The graduation of he and another student, Jay Barton, 18, were the first time any NBISD school changed announcements for transgender students’ preferred names, district officials said.  “It feels extremely validating because I’ve gone through my entire life, my school life, everything just being invalidated and being just uncomfortable with myself,” Rothrock said.

Nimishillen Township considering zone change at Fairhope school site

The township s Zoning Commission will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. to tackle the issue. The site, located in the 4000 block of Addison Avenue NE, is vacant since the school building was razed about a decade ago. A limited liability corporation called Fairhope Properties acquired the property from the Louisville City Board of Education. Its plans are not clear. They did file an application that they want to rezone, township Zoning Inspector Jeff Shipman said. They are going to bring their ideas to us. But no specifics (yet). Jay Barton, a local accountant who is an agent for Fairhope Properties, did not have much to say about plans for the property.

Lithopolis PD being trained with new restraint device

In an ongoing effort to utilize less lethal methods to end encounters with violent and non-compliant individuals, officers of the Lithopolis Police Department have been issued the BolaWrap Remote Restraint Device.  “Our officers were trained by a company trainer in the deployment and use of the device, which allows the officer to restrain an individual from a safe distance, greatly reducing the risk of injury to the officer and to the individual,” according to Police Chief Jay Barton. According to the manufacturer, Non-compliant subjects in mental health crisis and drug impaired subjects are often incapable of comprehending commands of officers.  BolaWrap enables officers to safely and humanely take subjects into custody without injury and get them the help they need.
