A North Carolina prosecutor announced that she will not pursue charges against Jeffrey Hash, an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who shot a Black pedestrian named Jason Walker on a busy road in Fayetteville earlier this year, finding that the Hash had reason to fear bodily harm and to defend himself.
An audio recording shows that an off-duty North Carolina sheriff’s deputy had a frantic conversation with a 911 operator after fatally shooting Jason Walker last weekend.
The Fayetteville Police Department said 37-year-old Jason Walker “ran into traffic and jumped on a moving vehicle" driven by an off-duty Cumberland County sheriff's deputy, who then shot Walker and called 911. A group of protesters disputed the account given by police.
