MONROE CITY, Mo. â When former Monroe City Mayor John Long tried to limit remarks during intense, often in-your-face confrontations from then frequent city critic Jerry Potterfield, Ward 3 Alderman Connie Painter came to Potterfieldâs defense.
âJust show Jerry some respect. He has the right to speak,â Painter said to Long during an intense debate on a utility bill owed by the former Arcadia Metalcraft in December 2019.
Now, seven months after Potterfield defeated Long to become mayor, the relationship has soured as Potterfield last month telephoned Painter to seek her resignation from the Board of Aldermen.
The demand for Painterâs resignation was not made public until the regular Jan. 21 Board of Aldermen meeting when Monroe City business owner and resident Terry Gibbs confronted the mayor about the call and questioned the mayorâs authority to ask for a council memberâs resignation.

we re stating that this is an optics issue. it s not an ethical issue. the language we re seeing in these articles are this could be an ethical issue. it only becomes an ethical issue if there s business involved in people actually getting money from hud and i don t see any of that in here right now. i look forward to the review. david, if i can say quickly, if i recall correctly, i believe the tour was an eight-city tour. ben carson jr. or bj, as i referred to him, was only involved in the baltimore tour. again, it was only to reach out to individuals who could assist dr. carson with being as effective as possible. again, this column that has a lot of innuendos, possiblies, maybes, it s just not accurate. it doesn t hold water. these reporters are looking and fishing for something that honestly isn t there. shermichael, jason, thank you. still ahead politics of football on the eve of the super bowl. can we expect the president to, once again, take to twitter to
i m david gura. hud secretary ben carson has an ethics problem. while we ve been distracted by the nunes memo, carson has been able to keep this from exploding into a firestorm which under normal circumstances may cause a bigger stir. according hud secretary ben carson allowed his son to help organize an agency listening tour to baltimore last summer despite warnings from department lawyers that doing so risked violating federal ethics rules. ben tweeting that he has been under attack by the media. two former staffers that work closely with ben carson at hud and senior strategist for ben carson s 2016 presidential campaign, jason osbourne. i want to get your reaction from the washington post. what do you make of what s been
