HARTFORD, Conn. Andrew Hillier hit a rare two-run sacrifice fly in the second inning, then belted a three-run homer during a seven-run third inning as the University of Southern Maine opened its NCAA Division III baseball tournament regional with a 17-2 win Thursday against Johnson & Wales.
Top-seeded USM (32-9) next plays at 2:30 p.m. Friday against the loser of Thursday’s late game between Wheaton (Mass.) and Salve Regina.

GORHAM Kirsten Pelletier and Alexis Brown each pitched a three-hitter, and Southern Maine clinched the No. 1 seed in the Little East Conference softball tournament by sweeping a doubleheader Saturday against Plymouth State, winning 9-0 and 4-2.
Ashley Tinsman paced the Game 1 offense in support of Pelletier (12-0), going 3 for 5 with two doubles and four RBI.
In Game 2, USM (29-2-1, 15-1 Little East) erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the fourth inning. Madison Day tied it with a two-run double, then scored on a single by Hannah Shields.

BOSTON Alexis Brown lined a first inning two-run triple and Lauren Leidemann-Smith followed with a run-scoring single as the University of Southern Maine rolled to an 8-0 win in five innings to secure a sweep in a softball doubleheader Tuesday over UMass-Boaton.
Leadoff hitter Erin Martin led the Huskies (24-1-1) with three hits, including a double. Leidemann-Smith and Brown each went 2 for 3 and Rona Scott and Ashley Tinsman each chipped in a pair of hits.
Samantha Hauck was 2 for 3 with a two-run home run to lead USM to an 11-5 win in the opener.
