republicans r7 were saying this is breaking down, we can t agree on the spending cuts. and you have democrats saying we re there on the spending cuts. we found a number. the issue is only this policy rider, the one that would take funding away from planned parenthood, and so it s hard to know since we re not inside the room where the truth is there, but i will tell you this, democrats say they have now agreed to about $38 billion in cuts. that is the number that speaker boehner had floated. so democrats have come up even in just the last few days, come up about $5 billion. so they say, look, we re there on the spending cuts. s a all about ideology. democrats are prepared to say if this government shuts down admit night tonight, there will be one reason and one reason only, because republicans did so on the basis of ideology, not trying to do something about the federal budget. you mentioned that $38 billion. democrats are saying that is 70% of what republicans were asking f
the president has had a couple meetings and we look at the planning going forward, 7:00 p.m. what do you know of what happened in the last meeting? well, it s interesting, you mention that the leaders are going to be coming back here. richard, it s hard to tell whether there s really some roll of your sleeves h bare knuckle negotiations going on. both sides are conscious of the fact the public is fed up. neither side wants to take the blame and a lot of this is prepositioning. you heard the president yesterday. he was out of town, but he compared the relationship in congress between republicans and democrats to a marriage. you don t always get the way, says the president. he sort of set himself up as the family counselor. we heard these two leaders come out. harry reid, the senate democrat ink le democratic leader said it s doable. he called it a frank discussion. john boehner said we continue to have productive conversations. we sincerely believe we can get an agreement. i
that s not how it works. our new nbc news/ wall street journal poll asked people in the united states whom they would blame for a shutdown if that were to happen. 20% would blame president obama, 20% would blame democrats in congress but 37% would blame republicans. let s go to nbc s mike viqueira live from the white house. these will be debated, numbers here, whether they vindicate the president s approach or show that he s at risk here. reporter: it s the way you look at it. if you combine president obama s 20% taking the blame and democrats taking the blame, that s 40%, that tops 37% of republicans but there may be overlap there. dubious logic on my part. the president is setting himself up in the role, richard, he had the marriage analogy, that makes hem a marriage or family counselor, calling the leadership to the white house here yesterday. of course, hill leadership. threatening to do today unless progress is made. the press secretary here, there was sufficient pr
