“Maybe I could impact healthcare and people’s lives if I went to nursing school,” Wayman said.
Wayman has spent the last eight years working in the pediatric cancer unit, learning to empathize with the moms as they walk their child down a path no one wants to go down.
“It tugs on your heartstrings,” she said. “I’ve had moments when I’ve sat and cried with a mother and together it was about us and our children.”
Even after years of helping families navigate this road, little did she know she would soon take a walk in their shoes.

MADISON, Wis. After a year of sharing tragic numbers, Public Health Madison & Dane County Director Janel Heinrich was enthusiastic about how far we’ve come.
“Fife hundred forty eight thousand one hundred fifty five doses have been administered to Dane County residents,” Heinrich said. “Sixty point five percent of our county has received at least one dose and 46.5% of Dane County residents are now fully vaccinated.”
Although those numbers may seem like a lot, health experts are still hoping that more people sign up to get their vaccine.

“Clearly, slower speeds and lowering the speed limit can save lives,” Rhodes-Conway said.
According to a study from AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the average risk of death for a pedestrian hit by a vehicle going 23 mph is 10%. At 32 mph, risk of death reaches 25%, 50% at 42 mph, and so forth.
How do you feel about speed limits on residential streets being lowered to 20mph?

Garrett Olson was kicked out of McPike Park when the City ordered the homeless to leave that encampment in February. Now, he’s being told to be out of Reindahl Park by May 9.
“It’s horrible, ” Olson said. “Trying to look at other people and watch them go through it too.”
Brenda Konkel, co-president of Occupy Madison, said the tiny homes project she’s been working on for the homeless got permanent zoning approval at the same council meeting Tuesday night, but it isn’t a solution to the needs of the homeless who have nowhere to go right now.

MADISON, Wis. As part of his final efforts as Dane County Sheriff, Dave Mahoney is paving the way for several other law enforcement agencies to join the nationwide 30×30 initiative.
The initiative attempts to advance the representation of women in law enforcement. According to research presented on the 30×30 website, women make up only 12% of sworn officers and 3% of police leadership in the U.S. The website also cites research showing that women are less likely to use excessive force, are named in fewer complaints and lawsuits, are perceived by communities as being more compassionate and honest, make fewer arrests (especially when it comes to communities of color) and see better outcomes for crime victims (particularly in sexual assault cases).
