MONTREAL A Montreal-area man went to sunny Jamaica over the holidays, only to be extradited from there to the United States to face fraud and money-laundering charges. Martin Hogan, 52, has been accused by U.S. authorities of bilking dozens of American seniors out of their savings in a cross-border swindle totalling as much as $2 million. According to the indictment, Hogan and several co-conspirators, both Canadian and American, told seniors they’d won a sweepstakes in Canada but needed to pay taxes or customs fees to release the money over the border. Five Americans were already convicted in the same scheme, most living on the American side of the border-straddling Mohawk community of Akwesasne.

BUFFALO, N.Y. The Western District U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. says his office is not taking the actions of those involved in the U.S. Capitol Building riots lightly.
According to Kennedy, his office has received a number of leads and tips regarding yesterday’s events at the Capitol Building.

Homicides saw a huge jump in the city of Niagara Falls in 2020.
A nearly 300 percent jump over prior years. With a five-year average of just 4.6 homicides per year from 2015 to 2019, Niagara Falls recorded three times that number this year.Â
The most recent murder was recorded in mid-December when a 49-year-old man was stabbed near his home on 20th Street.
Among the other killings was a 25-year-old woman who was gunned down at 20th Street and Centre Avenue as she left a memorial for another homicide victim in late September.

Just as 2020 was the year of COVID-19 in Buffalo, it was also tragically the year of gun violence with a projected 100 percent increase in shooting victims from 2019.
So to attack that trend, there s been more of a federal focus on gun smuggling from other states with less strict laws, like Ohio, which just down the 90.
One case in particular involving weapons like this involved two men, one from Ashtabula, Ohio and the other from Buffalo, bringing guns to the Queen City.
Buffalo man pleads guilty to assaulting federal officer during protests

A Western New York man has pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer during protests over the death of George Floyd earlier this year.
WIVB reports Keyondre Robinson, 18, of Buffalo, admitted throwing a water bottle at a Deputy United States Marshal during demonstrations in Buffalo’s Niagara Square on May 30. The bottle struck the deputy in the face, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York.
“With this plea, the defendant becomes the second individual to be convicted in the District in connection with the violent protests which were held here in late-May,” U.S. Attorney James P.
