Opinion: The Masked Singer is the latest in a long line of shows drawing on our increasingly shallow pool of celebrities. How long before the well runs dry, asks Sam Brooks.

This week on The Masked Singer NZ, the first of 2021 s many celebrity-based reality shows, the judging panel had to guess the celebrity hiding beneath the Tūī costume. Rhys Darby guessed Judith Collins. James Roque guessed Kylie Minogue (bless him). Ladi6 briefly hedged her bets on Danielle Cormack, but went with Suzy Cato, as did fellow panellist Sharyn Casey.

James Roque believes his show, Boy Mestizo, will give audiences what they need: an escape, a good laugh and a challenge. Comedy should be funny and it should speak truth to power, Roque told the Rotorua Daily Post.
Roque says he has been standing up to power since 2012, and has performed on stages across New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

OPINION: Who is it? Who is it? Who is it underneath the mask? As the theme song bellowed out of the television, signalling the beginning of episode two of The Masked Singer, I found myself in a predicament.
I loathed myself for coming crawling back to a show with a format I didn t understand and a talent pool who clearly felt the same. But I genuinely wanted to know - Who is it? Who is it? Who is it underneath the mask?

Comedian Rhys Darby will be guessing celebrity singer s identities in new local reality show, The Masked Singer NZ.
REVIEW: It’s the celebrity competition that has taken the world by storm. A South Korean head-to-head karaoke battle that has been distorted into something more akin to
Dancing With the Stars. Now, following the footsteps of everywhere from Morocco to Myanmar, the Netherlands to Norway, New Zealand finally has its own version of
The Masked Singer (Sundays from 7pm and Mondays from 7.30pm on Three). Twelve celebrities have been covered top-to-toe in extravagant costumes, each given a distinct character to play while they belt out a tune on each edition. It’s the task of the celebrity judging panel to try and work out who is under the mask – from their singing voice and a series of clues – before they are unveiled, usually one at the end of each show.

OPINION:
New Zealand s very own version of the highly addictive international sensation The Masked Singer hit our screens last night and the Kiwis were left baffled - truly and honestly baffled.
The show, which airs Sundays from 7pm and Mondays from 7.30pm on Three, has a somewhat simple enough premise. Twelve Kiwi celebrities are dressed in extravagant costumes and given a song to sing while dressed in said costume. The judges then have to try and guess who is under the mask, using only their voice and a series of clues.
