The theory goes that excess salt in your system leads to water retention in the blood, putting pressure on your blood vessels, raising your blood pressure. To reduce that risk, says the Government, adults should aim to consume less than 6g of added salt a day, just over one teaspoonful.  Not easy when you consider that two slices of bread alone provide 1g before you add fillings or flavourings.
