Godfrey stars in PFW s OT victory

The Purdue Fort Wayne men’s basketball team traded possession of momentum all game with Illinois-Chicago. More interestingly, and as expected, PFW’s Jarred Godfrey and UIC’s Teyvion Kirk went back and forth with masterful playmaking from the point guard positions.
Ultimately, Godfrey and the Mastodons emerged victorious.
Godfrey, a senior, had a career-best 41 points and PFW won 96-89 in overtime at the Gates Center, where the teams will meet again Saturday.
Godfrey’s previous career best was 28 points. He had three straight field goals – all off drives through the paint – to cement the overtime run for PFW. He finished 13 of 24 from the field with nine rebounds and four assists.

BOTTOM LINE: Illinois-Chicago seeks revenge on Purdue Fort Wayne after dropping the first matchup in Fort Wayne. The teams last met on Jan. 8, when the Mastodons shot 53.6 percent from the field while holding Illinois-Chicago to just 42.9 percent on their way to a seven-point victory.
LEADING THE WAY: Purdue Fort Wayne’s Jarred Godfrey has averaged 18.5 points and 4.9 rebounds while Jalon Pipkins has put up 12 points. For the Flames, Teyvion Kirk has averaged 15.9 points, seven rebounds and 8.5 assists while Rob Howard has put up 13.8 points and 6.8 rebounds.

The Purdue Fort Wayne men’s basketball team was ecstatic to be back on the court over the weekend, not surprising after seven games had been scrapped and a last-minute change to the schedule put Cleveland State at the Gates Center for two games.
Once the Mastodons break down film of Sunday’s 89-80 loss to Cleveland State, one in which PFW was dominated by a relatively unknown player, but able to scrap its way back from 34 points down in the second half, the Mastodons will likely hammer home the idea that just playing isn’t enough – they’ve got to play better, even in these unpredictable times.

Purdue Fort Wayne is back in the Gates Center, where the Mastodons are about to play their first ever Horizon League game against Cleveland State.
If that s news to you – weren t the Mastodons supposed to be playing IUPUI? – you re not (too) far behind the times. PFW learned yesterday afternoon that IUPUI would not be able to compete this weekend because of COVID-19 test results. Luckily, Cleveland State was available, and this is the first game of a weekend doubleheader.
The Vikings are 0-3 after taking losses from Toledo, Ohio and Ohio State. They still haven t played a home game yet.
