Forceful theft leads to robbery arrest

What ordinarily would have been a shoplifting incident became a robbery last week when the suspect alluded to having a gun, according to the Davis Police Department.
Jake Howard Scoggins, 23, went into Davis Cards and Games at 654 G St. around 8 p.m. Tuesday and allegedly took property without paying, telling the owner on the way out that he had a gun, Sgt. Janell Bestpitch said.
While no weapon was seen, the involvement of “force or fear” in the alleged theft elevated it to a robbery, Bestpitch said. The suspect was gone by the time officers arrived on scene, but they recognized him on security video from prior contacts.
