The greatest moments in reading, as Alan Bennett reminds us, are those when “you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things” that seems so immediate and personal it is “as if a hand has come out and taken yours”. As those who have had the pleasure of reading Samuel Pepys’s diary will know, the hand that emerges from it does not do so gently, as Bennett imagines, but rather grabs yours forcefully, slops beer on the table, then slaps you hard about the face. And the less said about where that hand might have been earlier in the day, the better.
