The Islamic State group had quickly claimed responsibility for the Jan. 21 blasts at a busy open-air market in the Iraqi capital. At least 32 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded.
Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi tweeted Thursday that an intelligence-led operation in northern Iraq killed 39-year-old Abu Yasar al-Issawi, deputy commander and IS chief in Iraq.

Security forces have killed Abu Yaser al-Issawi, an Islamic State commander who had claimed to be the leader of the group in Iraq and its deputy caliph , Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi has said.

Iraqi security forces killed a top Islamic State commander in the country days after suicide bombings tore through the capital, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al Kadhimi said.
Abu Yasar al Issawi, 39, was reportedly killed in the northern city of Kirkuk during an operation conducted by Iraq’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service. Issawi, born Jabbar al-Issawi, led ISIS forces in Iraq and was deputy commander of the terrorist group.
