Travel: Explore presidential history in Midwest homes

In last week’s column, I wrote about a couple of presidential museums in the Midwest that I had been very excited to visit. This week I want to write about some homes I have visited that were inhabited by presidents. As a fan of history and architecture, I’ve always jumped on an opportunity to tour a historically-significant home or mansion. There are many in the Midwest that are worth the admission price and the hour or so for a guided tour. Some of them happen to be homes that once belonged to men who served at president. In fortified Sacramento, MLK Day is celebrated amid DC fears

Michigan, Virginia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Washington are among the states that have activated their National Guards to strengthen security. But in Sacramento, hundreds of people were determined to celebrate an unconventional MLK Day by joining a vehicle caravan through the capital city. Under the protection of the police escort, people navigating low-riders, bikes, cars and trucks took a winding course through the streets, beeping horns and showing both pride and perseverance in a city that has seen its share of troubles in the last year, including racial unrest. They did not pass near the fenced-lined Capitol, where more than 1,000 National Guard troops are currently stationed at the city’s core. But they traveled with a message of unity and solidarity, with the police beside them, if only for a day.

On Monday morning, Stevante stood in the back of a flatbed truck with an amplified microphone and a message for uniformed officers standing nearby. Sac PD and everybody up there, let s get it, he shouted at a half-dozen cops, setting off a cacophony of horns from the motorized procession behind him and sparking law enforcement to turn on their blinking lights to guide this march.

Coming soon to Brookline s Washington Street: A vacant grass lot?

Wicked Local Purchased last year for nearly $3 million and situated in the heart of Brookline Village, 370 Washington St. seems prime fodder for a developer looking to turn a profit.  But the building s owners are in no rush, planning to raze the building and leave a grass lot as a placeholder.  They re facing some challenges. Unhappy neighbors claim the Italianate Victorian is integral to neighborhood and want it preserved. The Planning Board, after hearing the owners plans, has recommended against granting a permit.  Soon, the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals will decide the building’s fate. What’s going on?
