Winter wallops southern Maine with snow, wind, but some businesses carry on

For some Mainers eagerly anticipating a white Christmas, the holiday has come early. Winter Storm Gail on Thursday morning plowed into southern Maine, delivering heavy snow, gusty winds and hundreds of weather closures for businesses and schools. As of mid-morning, forecasts called for at least 1 foot of snow in Cumberland and York counties, with some areas receiving as much as 18 inches. Temperatures were in the teens. The National Weather Service had issued a winter storm warning for all of York, Cumberland, Kennebec, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo counties, as well as southern Oxford County. North of Bangor, however, the storm was predicted to only leave a trace of snow, as Gail swerves out to sea. Earlier in the day and on Wednesday, the storm had pummelled much of the northeastern U.S., leaving over 40 inches of snow in some places.

Clyde to make faster rural broadband access an issue in

Rep.-elect Andrew Clyde said one of his top priorities will be the same as the man he will replace in Congress, Doug Collins. And that is the need for improved broadband internet access in rural America. Clyde said the coronavirus pandemic has underscored the need for better broadband access because many families do not have access to speeds that allow the parents to work from home and the children to attend school remotely. Even more than normal, these families are dependent on their internet connections for their children education, said Clyde, a Republican who will take office representing Georgia s Ninth Congressional District in January. In too many parts of this country and too many parts of this district, internet connections are not fast or reliable enough for families to learn, work or communicate consistently, so we need a new approach to bridging the internet divide.
