Contributor, pete hexter. Is this escalation in afghanistan . Not necessarily. The commanders on the ground have unwanted to unleash hill on the taliban and isis. But rules of engagement, constraints from the white house have prevented them from fighting the war you need to. This is one strike but its the right step and motivate guys on the ground. This is a direct response to the fact that we lost a green beret fighting on the ground. Is it retaliation . The pentagon wont admit that. But ill tell you this, you take one of ours, President Trump said were going to go after you and unleash hill on you. This is in a known isis part of afghanistan. That looked like a bunker buster. Has the fins. It was targeting a tunnel complex. Isis lives underground to avoid detection. Thats what they were doing in that area. Upwards of 1,000 fighters in the nangarhar province. We sent special operators in there. They lose their lives. Why not drop one of these on them. Civilian casualties . Could be. A
Almost exactly to a t the instructions that isis has put out in its social Media Channels before with instructions to their followers on how to carry out such an attack. Paul judge Michael Mukasey served as the 81st attorney general of the United States, and he also presided over the criminal prosecution of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing suspects. Judge, good to have you here again. Good to be here. Paul you heard john miller. This is the kind of nightmare scenario for people who are trying to prevent this. Somebody selfradicalizedded here, very hard to stop. Well, selfradicalized is one of those phrases that, frankly, id like to bury because he didnt invent the doctrine, he didnt create the videos, the support system and Everything Else that goes with it. He was alone, in a sense, but somebody who had passed through the radar before. Paul what i mean by that is there is not links that would have shown him to have popped up on the screen where the fbi or nypd could say, aha, hes s
And nobody should doubt my word. That sounds like a red line to me. Sounds like a red line to me too. [laughter] you know, in a way this is not unusual. This deal is not a treaty, but in treaties often theres a provision for a 90day or 180day notice of withdrawal. That, in effect, is what he served today. Because the idea that congress and europe can somehow change the teal in a way that satisfies the president s concerns is simply not going to happen. Theres a small complication here. Iran is part of the deal, and they have to agree to it. Believe me, theyre not going to do it. Paul no. Theyve already said theyre not going to have anything to do with the renegotiation. Theyll be backed up by russia and china, so the pressure will be on europe to try to come to some accommodation with us. But i dont see them really being eager to do that, because theyre doing a lot of business with their companies are doing a lot of business in iran now. Well, precisely, and that was what the ayatollah

Why did they succeed on taxes when they failed on health care . Right. That is one question, because you would expect a failure to make it harder to succeed. But i think here the Health Care Failure really focused the minds for the gop that, for them, it was do or die for their majority in 2018 to get a tax bill passed. And it wasnt always clear they would choose do. [laughter] but also i think there was a rougher consensus on what a tax bill should look like where on health care a lot of variety, you know, some wanted to keep entitlemen
I still believe Andrew Mccabe is a good person. The Inspector General found he lied and theres severe consequences in the Justice Department for lying. Paul joining the panel is deputy editor, dan henninger, kim strassel and jason riley. So kim, weve got the memos now, the comey memos, which were kept secret for a long time. Now theyre out. What did we learn from them . I think two big takeaways. One is that mr. Comey has been very spare with the truth and that when you read through these its clear that the context changes a lot of his concern. So for instance, mr. Comey was very concerned that trump had demanded his loyalty. He was very concerned that trump asked him to let the issue of general flynn go. When you read through these you find the loyalty discussions were in part related to mr. Mccabe, the fact that mr. Trump was very rough on him during the election season. He was worried there might be bad blood there. And the flynn one also making his case for why he didnt think that
