KARACHI: Inspector General of Police Mushtaq Ahmed Mahar on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the killing of a Sindh University student in an alleged encounter in Sukkur after the incident sparked outrage on social media and opposition parties in the provincial assembly demanded a judicial inquiry.
Mohammed Irfan Jatoi was shot dead in a suspected encounter in Sukkur on Sunday. The police alleged that he was a “notorious dacoit” wanted in connection with several crimes. However, his friends and social media activists rejected the police claim and said that he was taken away by the law enforcers from SU on Feb 10 and they killed him in their custody after almost a month.

SUKKUR: The Sukkur Police claimed to have killed a criminal in an encounter, while the parents and others dismissed police’s claim, and declared the police’s encounter was fake, as the deceased was allegedly arrested from the hostel of Sindh University on February 10, 2021 by the law enforcement agencies.
Reports said the Sukkur Police claimed that in the limits of Jhanghro Police Station, a police party was patrolling the area and happened to meet some alleged criminals. After an exchange of fire, an alleged criminal, identified as Irfan Jatoi, was killed while his other accomplices managed to escape from the scene. The police claimed to have recovered a pistol from the possession of the deceased.

A 25-year-old University of Sindh student was allegedly killed by the police. According to the police, Irfan Jatoi was a wanted criminal in several districts – and opened fire during a police encounter. Locals, however, report that the young man was innocent.

A student of the University of Sindh in Jamshoro, identified as Irfan Jatoi, was found dead near Sukkur s Pannu Aqil Tuesday.
According to the victim s family and friends, the police picked him up from the varsity s hostel on February 8 claiming that Jatoi was named in over 20 FIRs and had been on the run. They kept my son in custody for over a month, the student s father said. When we went for his bail, they asked us to pay Rs25,000.
