The Iowa Freedom Riders, an Iowa City civil rights activist group, announced a pause to its People s Truth and Reckoning Commission on Sunday.
The group announced via social media that the commission, which launched in April, was not serving its intended purpose of being a place for Black and Brown people to discuss injustices they ve experienced locally. Since (its founding), the PTRC meetings have steered off course and have become a place for white people to come and discuss their issues, and while their issues are valid, they are more likely to be heard by those in power, the group wrote in a news release.

A City Councilor is proposing that the newly created Iowa City Truth and Reconciliation Commission be suspended after a rocky start.
Laura Bergus spoke to the Daily Iowan this week and emailed the council with her proposal to be considered for the upcoming City Council meeting. She added that she reached out to three members of the commission, including current chair Mohammed Traore to inform them of her intentions.
When the Truth and Reconciliation Commission met last week, Johnson County Supervisor Royceann Porter resigned from her chair position.
