The Iowa Freedom Riders, an Iowa City civil rights activist group, announced a pause to its People's Truth and Reckoning Commission on Sunday.
The group announced via social media that the commission, which launched in April, was not serving its intended purpose of being a place for Black and Brown people to discuss injustices they've experienced locally.
"Since (its founding), the PTRC meetings have steered off course and have become a place for white people to come and discuss their issues, and while their issues are valid, they are more likely to be heard by those in power," the group wrote in a news release.
