Again, it was not a philosophical thing, i just did not like the object. I do not remember the second object, or the third or the fourth. But i started collecting. And basically, have been collecting for several decades. I didnt start out with the anticipation of creating a museum. I was what most people would call an obsessive collector, and the idea of it becoming not just a collection as teaching tools, but actually a museum happened much later. So, not everybody where you grew up was collecting these items. Theres got to be more. What was it that made you keep doing it . David you know, i dont know. I have been thinking about that a lot. Portrait caricatures took on a martial air with all the military heroes who were portrayed. But it sent many to the field, like the soldier artists. Artists like Winslow Homer went to the field to do sketches for the weekly newspapers and evolved into very successful artists. But in terms of what it did to landscaping, it totally revolutionized the romantic attitude artists had toward this socalled american eden, the pristine landscape of the americas. The United States Public Health service as it exists today is a product of experience extending over a period of nearly 150 years. It was originally created as a Marine Hospital service for the purpose of providing medical care to american seamen. It was established by an act of congress signed by the second president of the United States, john adams, on july 16, 1798. This service was originally supported by a tax on american merchant seamen. This was later abolished. It was collected by the collector of the customs of the treasury department. And the Marine Hospital service came under the jurisdiction of that department where it remains today. The first Marine Hospital located at norfolk, virginia. The second was built in boston, massachusetts. Some of the medical personnel were used by the union and the confederacy for the care of the sick and wounded of the military forces. It frequently happened the medical officers of the early Marine Hospital were the first position to diagnose
