Poet in gold jacket
Join us on Sunday, May 9, 2021 from 2:00pm - 3:00pm Central for a generative workshop with featured poet Megan Fernandes.
Workshop Description: Experimental Writing
This generative writing workshop guides students through different forms and prompts of experimental writing in the 20th century beginning with the innovations of modernism and ending with feminist diasporic poetry. The goal of the class is to loosely define and explore the “playfulness” of experimentation and see its potentialities and possibilities as challenging narrative chronology, the coherence and singularity of the speaker, and the formula of a volta or catharsis.
Recommended for participants 16 years and above.
The seven- and nine-year-olds questioned why they had to do what I said because “you’re not our mom.” The four-year-old, though, quickly became my friend. (No more than that. More than what a simple word could describe.) At the library, she sat on my lap for story time while her siblings bickered at the computers. I read her books, made paper crowns with her and those top hats that she called a “gentlemen’s hat,” and ran her to the bathroom each time I heard her little kid voice tremble, “Um. Miss Chelsey? I need you.” More than a babysitter, I felt like her mother.

Bari Mitzmann, a Jewish blogger with a sizable Instagram following, for the second year has spearheaded a joint Haggadah project she calls “HaKol B’Seder” in Hebrew it can mean either “everything in the Seder” or “it’s all good.”
Her thorough Haggadah and broader guide to the holiday weaves in an array of female voices ranging from chefs to moms to therapists who either talk about how a specific part of the Seder resonates with them or provide tips on how to fruitfully get through the Passover season. It’s aimed at those feeling overwhelmed by the COVID pandemic, all of the preparations that a Seder entails, the pressure to intellectualize the holiday’s themes or all of the above.
