On October 13, 1972, a chartered Uruguayan Air Force plane was flying the Old Christians Club rugby team over the Andes to play a match in Santiago, Chile when something went wrong. An inexperienced co-pilot mistook his bearings and struck the top of a mountain, which dislodged the Fairchild twin-prop’s tail, and both wings. The fuselage landed on a glacier and barrelled along it at 350km an hour before crashing into a pile of ice and snow. The impact ripped seats from their moorings, causing a concertina crush that killed several people.
