Im peter bergen and peter bergen and i run into National Security foundation and its my great pleasure to introduce my colleague and friend Michael Waltz who has this wonderful new book out warrior diplomat a green berets battles from washington to afghanistan which really outlines mikes unusual career both being someone who is creating policy in the white house and the south asia adviser to Vice President cheney and carrying out the policies and the field as a special forces officer. Mike is also running a successful business. Todays briefing is about the Internet Committee titled Circuit Court decision on fcc open internet roles is it random or is it a law. Such short notice the decision came on tuesday. Weve been awaiting it and wanted to do a briefing as close to the decision as possible. This is the congressional internet caucus advisory committee. We take no position on legislation or regulation but the proposition that the internet is extremely important and that we should try to insure a sound Decision Making so what we try to do in these meetings is any issue that affects the internet, we try to have a balanced perspective. A lot of perspectives on the issue and have a collegial issue on the topic. The socalled Net Neutrality rules lend itself to that type of debate. It has the potential to impact everything from how we use the internet and pay for prescription drugs to food safety and the environment. Its controversial because most negotiations happen in secret. Not even members of congress have seen a draft of the complete text. Digital activists, as well as many others have some deep concerns, fuelled by wikileaks and others.
