The aquaculture industry’s progress on sustainability relies on diversifying the types of ingredients it uses in its feed formulations but the drive to extend the raw material basket with novel inputs such as insect meals, single cell proteins and algal oil is, thus far, only partly successful, says a dsm-firmenich executive.
Fera Science Ltd is to lead a research project for the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) that will investigate what the risks are from using novel, currently non-approved waste substrates to rear insects such as the Black soldier fly (BSF) and yellow mealworm.
