A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has raised the alarm over how Magistrates courts in Abuja, Lagos, Nasarawa and others assume jurisdiction on cases, and “recklessly” issue remand orders against suspects on the request of police prosecutors. According to Inibehe, the Nigerian police could arrest a person for cases that are civil in nature, or for criminal cases and instead of granting suspect bail or charging same to court, the police would approach Magistrates’ Courts and obtain remand orders to keep the suspect for weeks in their custody as a way of punishing the suspect.
The Amnesty International, a former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani and a human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, have demanded thorough investigation and arrest of police officers who arrested and brutalised the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State capital on Wednesday. Outrages have continued to trail Ajaero's arrest and barbaric brutalisation by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force.
