A giant plume of smoke took over the west side of Indianapolis on Friday as firefighters battled 80,000 tons of burning scrap metal and strong wind conditions for 13 hours at OmniSource Corporation, a recycling plant on South Holt Road.
Passersby watched as thick smoke stretched across two miles, thickly billowing 30-35 feet above the blaze. A shelter-in-place order, lasting at least five hours, asked nearby businesses and residents to stay indoors, turn off their air conditioners and close windows. Drivers were warned of limited visibility.

This story was updated Wednesday night with new information about the shooting and the man taken into custody.
Police late Wednesday identified a man who was critically injured during an exchange of gunfire with officers the day before following a traffic stop on Indianapolis east side.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the man is 21-year-old Tavon Macklin and noted that his condition after being taken to Eskenazi Hospital had been upgraded to stable.
