Dow to build MDI distillation and prepolymers facility

Dow plans to build an integrated MDI distillation and prepolymers facility at its world-scale manufacturing site in Freeport, Texas. This investment supports increasing demand for downstream polyurethane systems products and advances Dow’s leading positions in attractive applications in construction, consumer, and industrial markets that are growing above GDP.
The new Freeport MDI facility will replace Dow’s current North America capacity in La Porte, Texas, and will also be capable of supplying an additional 30% of product to Dow’s customers. In coordination with the start-up of the new MDI facility, expected in 2023, Dow will shut down its polyurethane assets at the La Porte site.

American chemicals and materials giant Dow revealed plans Wednesday to construct a new integrated MDI distillation and prepolymers facility at its manufacturing site in Freeport, TX. The asset will replace its existing North American capacity in La Porte, TX and will allow the firm to increase its supply of the product by 30%.

MIDLAND, Mich. Dow Inc. has roared into 2021 with strong first-quarter financial results.
The materials giant posted sales of almost $11.9 billion for the quarter, up almost 22 percent vs. the same quarter in 2020. The firm also posted a profit of just over $1 billion for the quarter, almost four times higher than its profit in the year-ago quarter. The global COVID-19 pandemic began affecting financial results of many public firms in March 2020. We remained agile in an extremely dynamic business environment, CEO and Chairman Jim Fitterling said on an April 22 conference call. He added that all of Dow s production units that were affected by Winter Storm Uri, which hit Texas in February, are back online. Dow s production of polyethylene, ethylene and related materials was affected by the storm.
