Red Tide Is Sticking Around Tampa Bay Area, FWC Report Shows

Red tide is still being found in Tampa Bay and along the beaches from Pasco to Sarasota counties. A report on Friday from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shows that a red tide bloom that has been plaguing the greater Tampa Bay region hasn t gone anywhere. High levels of the organism that causes red tide were found in several areas in Tampa Bay, from South Tampa to the coast line of downtown St. Petersburg to the southern parts of the bay. High concentrations were also found off Indian Shores Beach, Fort DeSoto and along Sarasota County s beaches from Longboat Key to Turtle Beach.

Red tide levels remain high around Pinellas County, Tampa Bay

Red tide has been causing problems around Pinellas for the last few weeks, but nothing as bad as conditions experienced after Hurricane Elsa passed offshore July 6-7. Pinellas County staff as well as Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that red tide in concentrations ranging from high to low have been found in recent water samples along Pinellas County’s beaches, the Intracoastal Waterway and Tampa Bay. Dead fish continue to be a big problem. Staff says the county’s contractor is using 16 vessels to try to scoop up the dead fish before they get to shore. As of July 15, crews had removed 902 tons of red-tide related debris.

FWC Report Finds Lingering High Concentrations Of Red Tide In Tampa Bay

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Fish kills continue to pollute the waters around downtown St. Petersburg and smaller die-offs were reported in Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota counties. High concentrations of red tide continue to be found in Tampa Bay and off the coasts of Pinellas, Sarasota and Manatee counties, according to the latest sampling data from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. A massive fish kill in Tampa Bay continues to pollute the waters around downtown St. Petersburg and smaller die-off’s have been reported in Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee and Sarasota counties. Researchers found red tide in 107 samples from Pasco County south to Sarasota County.

Respiratory irritation, dead fish reported around Tampa Bay

While red tide conditions remain much-improved along Pinellas County’s Gulf beaches, the same can’t be said for areas in and along Tampa Bay. A report released July 9 by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says bloom concentrations of the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, were observed in water samples taken in Pinellas, Pasco, Hillsborough and Sarasota counties with the highest concentrations in Tampa Bay. Concentrations from high to background levels were found in Pinellas, very low to medium in Pasco, very low to high in Hillsborough and low to medium in Sarasota. Fish kills suspected to be related to red tide were reported in all four counties and respiratory irritation was reported in Pinellas and Sarasota counties.
