Veteran Indian-origin South African anti-apartheid activist Maniben Sita died on Wednesday due to Covid.
Maniben, 94, was hospitalised last week in Pretoria after contracting the virus. Inspired by her father Nana Sita, who in turn was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Maniben devoted her entire life to fighting apartheid in all its forms. Maniben was born in 1926 into a family which was actively involved in political resistance in both her father s native India and then in South Africa. Like her father, she was also jailed many times in the prisons.
Nana Sita, who had spent several months living with Mahatma Gandhi, became a part of his Satyagraha and continued the resistance even after Gandhi returned to India. PTI

Memorial stones dedicated to 3 Indian-origin South African freedom fighters unveiled
Johannesburg, Dec 10: Memorial stones dedicated to Indian-origin South African freedom fighters Shirish Nanabhai, Reggie Vandeyar and Indres Naidoo have been unveiled at a cemetery here.
Vandeyar passed away in 2015 at the age of 84, while Nanabhai and Naidoo passed on a year later, aged 78 and 80, respectively.
Memorial stones in honour of the three anti-apartheid leaders were unveiled on Tuesday by members of the non-governmental organisation, Ahmed Kathrada Foundation (AKF), at the grave site of their long-time comrade and South African revolutionary leader Laloo “Isu” Chiba at the Westpark Cemetery.
