India has evacuated a total of 670 Indian nationals from Sudan and is looking at rescuing more of its citizens from the strife-torn African nation before the end of a tenuous ceasefire between the regular army and a paramilitary force.

Two C-130J military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force brought to Jeddah 256 Indians from Port Sudan on Wednesday, a day after an Indian Navy ship rescued 278 citizens from that country.The fifth batch of 297 stranded Indians departed from Port Sudan for Jeddah in Saudi Arabia by INS Teg on Thursday. While most of those rescued were people from Bihar and UP, who worked as labourers in steel and tile factories in Sudan, there were several businessmen and doctors from Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
The Ministry of External Affairs’ official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said 278 people onboard the ship departed Port Sudan for the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah.
